Gabonese mask from the Galoa culture, provenance private collection, dating to the mid-20th century, measuring 34 cm high, 1 cm wide and 1 cm deep, weight 1 g, in good condition, authentic original.
Description from the seller
The Galoa masks constitute a major form of artistic expression of the Galoa (or Galwa) ethnic group, a Pounou sub-group established downstream of Lambaréné on the Ogooué River in Gabon. These ritual objects, mainly produced by the Okukwé society, are characterized by their flat, oval shape adorned with distinctive painted decorations.
Used in specific ceremonial contexts, these masks serve initiates’ confraternities to identify sorcerers during community protection rituals. Their style shows affinities with Adouma/Aduma masks, bearing witness to regional cultural exchanges.
Galoa masked production fits into a complex belief system where visual art functions as a mediator between the visible world and spiritual forces. These pieces, often referred to as “Okuyi masks,” thus represent not only aesthetic works but also instruments of social regulation and the maintenance of the traditional cosmological order within Gabonese communities.
