The mineral Topaz is a nesosilicate with the chemical composition Al2[6][(F,OH)2|SiO4]. The fluorine (F) and hydroxide (OH) ions indicated in the round brackets can substitute for each other in the formula (substitution, diadochy), but always occur in the same ratio to the other constituents of the mineral. An F-free OH- analogue is known as a synthetic compound.
Topaz crystallizes in the orthorhombic crystal system and typically forms well-developed and sometimes very plate-like crystals with short- to long-prismatic or columnar habit and a glassy surface luster. In pure form it is colorless and transparent. However, due to multiple light refractions caused by lattice defects or polycrystalline structure, it can also appear white and, with trace impurities, take on yellow, pinkish to brownish-red, violet, pale blue, and pale green colors, with the transparency accordingly decreasing.
