Neoclassical decorative ewer in alabaster and marble, made in Italy, in good condition, dimensions 8 cm wide by 26 cm high by 11 cm deep.
Description from the seller
An incredible example of Italian artistic craftsmanship, this decorative pitcher (or ewer) is a refined display piece that skillfully blends two noble materials: alabaster and marble. The object features a polychrome, segmented structure, typical of the outstanding inlays from Tuscan workshops (Volterra area).
Material Analysis and Technique:
The work plays with the color and tactile contrast of carefully selected natural stones:
The Central Body and the Figure:
Made in white veined alabaster. Alabaster, known for its translucence and softness, has been used here to sculpt the handle in the shape of a mythological creature (Dragon/Griffin) and the belly of the pitcher. The semi-gloss finish highlights the natural gray veining of the stone.
The Neck, Spout, and Pedestal:
Made in brown alabaster or onyx, with warm amber and earthy tones, creating a perfect chromatic frame for the light central body.
The Structural Base:
The object rests on a solid multi-tier plinth, where a white fine-grained marble element (inserted between the dark alabaster bases) ensures stability and an additional material contrast.
Artistic Details:
The design is inspired by Neoclassical style, with particular attention to the dynamism of the handle: the mythological creature seems to climb the edge, with stylized wings and the head turned upward, serving as a sculptural grip. The spout is finely turned in the shape of a floral corolla or an inverted acanthus leaf.
