Baoulé African stool from Ivory Coast. Very beautiful geometric shapes. Very interesting stool in the shape of a stylized turtle, the handle represents the head of the animal, the feet represent the legs and the seat represents the body of the turtle.
The Baoulé are one of the most important ethnic groups in Ivory Coast. Their name translates their origin: according to a legend, Queen Aba Pokou led her people in exodus toward the regions of gold mines during the 18th century; she had to sacrifice her son to the river god in order to cross it. The people were therefore called the “Bauli,” which means: “the son is dead.”
Baoulé artists have produced numerous works of art and are still very active today. Thanks to their sense of stylization and their attention to detail, they have created pieces that rank among the most elegant African objects. The Baoulé created masks, statues, figurines, fetishes, combs, chairs, loom pulleys, canes, spear-throwers, slings, ointment boxes, oracle boxes, divination boxes, carved doors, bead necklaces, and also gold and bronze jewelry worn during major ceremonies.
