African bronze
Height: 330 mm
Width: 265 mm
Depth: 20 mm
Weight: 2650 g
Technique: lost-wax casting (unique piece)
Plaque representing a king or a warrior on horseback. A coating plaque cast in lost-wax, most likely depicting a war chief or an emissary, and in any case a high-ranking dignitary of the royal court, bearing the multi-strand coral bead necklace and a necklace of leopard teeth turned inward, attributes characteristic of the court of the Oba, reigning (or king) of the ancient Benin Kingdom
Benin art is described as court art because it is closely associated with the king, known as the Oba. The tradition of court objects in bronze from Ifé dates back to the 14th century. These rectangular-form altars were topped with heads, statues, carved ivory tusks, bells, and staves. They served to commemorate an oba and to contact his spirit.
