These nuggets originate from the desert region of Tiris Zemmour in northern Mauritania, about a hundred kilometers from an area called Guelb Ndour.
Gold mining here used to be reserved for a large industrial company.
But since 2016 individual prospecting with metal detectors has been permitted.
The gold from this region is fairly pure; in general its purity is about 950 to 980 thousandths, which corresponds to 22.80 to 23.50 karats.
Although gold mining has become one of Mauritania's most important resources, nuggets are quite rare, as almost all the gold is melted into ingots that are then sent to Dubai.

These nuggets I photographed in daylight as truthfully and accurately as possible.
