Description from the seller
Triumph TR4 A IRS Roadster 1966
• Engine and transmission revised
• Only 2,852 miles driven after engine and gearbox revision
• Damage- and rust-free
• More than 30 years in the possession of the last owner
• Desirable IRS version with independent rear suspension
• Beautiful color combination
HISTORY:
The Triumph TR4: a popular roadster as it should be: lightweight, agile, and a joy to drive. Coupled with a stunning Italian design. Italian design on an English car, you may wonder? Indeed: the design came from Michelotti, who provided legendary designs for various coachbuilders and brands such as Ferrari and Maserati.
The car was built in 1966 and originally delivered in the United States, where the climate is favorable. The last American owner held the Triumph in ownership in Monterey, California. In 1994 the car was imported to the Netherlands, after which the car has always been owned by the same owner.
The car comes with extensive documentation, including export documents, an original 'Owners Handbook', the latest MOT form from 2021 (afterwards MOT was not mandatory due to the age of the car). In addition, there is a thick stack of beautiful books, including a parts catalog and workshop manual.
EXTERIOR:
A sight to behold, especially the example we offer in a gorgeous color combination: British Racing Green (color code 75) with a beige leather interior. The paint was refinished in the 1990s and is therefore not in perfect condition. Logically the car shows signs of use, but the body has not been welded and it is a damage-free and very solid car.
The chrome and lighting are in fresh condition. The rubbers show signs of use. The black soft top is in good condition without cracking. For a good impression view our extensive photo report, including photos of the underside of the car.
INTERIOR:
The interior is still in neat condition with only minimal signs of use. The beige leather is free of cracks. The large, almost vertically mounted steering wheel and elegant large dials make the interior a pleasant place. The dashboard is beautifully finished with wood. The seats are adjustable. The interior also features optional heating. The trunk space is neat and accommodates the spare wheel, a wrench and a jack.
TECHNICAL:
Only 2,852 miles (4,590 km) the engine and gearbox have been revised. The underside of the car is very solid and has withstood the test of time very well. At the rear are adjustable 'Spax' telescopic shock absorbers installed. At the front are 'KONI Classic' shock absorbers fitted. New rubbers are also installed. The car starts, shifts, brakes and drives very well and is thus ready for the next owner.
GENERAL:
The TR4 is a sports car produced from 1961 to 1965 and is the successor to the TR3. Under the skin, the first series of the TR4 is largely the same as the TR4, but thanks to a longer wheelbase the TR4 has more room. The larger doors provide room for downward-opening quarterlights, unlike the TR3. Visually, the TR4 differs from the TR3: a sturdy and large grille and clean lines. A hallmark is the hump on the hood, which houses the two carburetors. The TR4 was designed by the Italian designer Michelotti, whose involvement ensured a wonderfully beautiful design, considered by many to be the prettiest in the entire Triumph TR series.
Because of the importance placed on the American market, relatively few units were sold in Europe. The 4-cylinder engine is bored to 2138 cc. Due to the sporty driving characteristics, a number of TR4s were used by the British police at the time. The TR4 was succeeded in 1965 by the TR4 A IRS, where IRS stands for Independent Rear Suspension. This independent rear suspension provides more ride comfort and better handling, which today makes it a desirable version.
Furthermore, the sober metal TR4 dashboard was fitted with a refined wooden panel, and the handbrake control moved to the transmission tunnel between the seats. Since the TR4 A IRS was produced only until 1967, the production total is relatively low at 28,468 units. An exact steering, outstanding road manners thanks to the well-balanced undercarriage, sportiness and suppleness make the TR4 a sporty and desirable tour car.

Catawiki always aims to offer you the best possible buying experience. Our experts virtually review and select every vehicle in line with our submission guidelines and we require our sellers to provide the most accurate description of the vehicle. However, providing a fully detailed analysis of the vehicle is extremely difficult, and close to impossible. To guide you, we ask our sellers to provide information about the vehicle’s condition. Please consider that most vehicles for sale are classic vehicles and they often already have a whole life behind them, meaning that even a condition 1 or 2 vehicle might need maintenance to be ready for the road. It is advised to carefully read our submission guidelines that further describe details about the condition grades and types to manage your expectations. Cars are sold “as is”, meaning as described and in the condition they are in at the time of the sale and without any representation, warranty or assumption of liability of any kind as to the condition by Catawiki or by the seller. The condition of this item is the opinion of the seller and may differ from yours, your local garage, or the dealer’s opinion. This does not automatically mean the car does not conform to its description. Before bidding, please check your local legislation regarding vehicle registration. Neither the seller nor Catawiki is responsible for the registration of the vehicle in your country and will not accept a cancellation for your failure to register the vehicle. We also recommend that, if possible, you arrange a viewing with the seller before placing a bid.
