Vintage 1960s red decapé wooden floor lamp with six opalina globes, France, 160 × 70 cm, in working order.
Description from the seller
Red decapé street lamp, 60's - France
Floor lamp made of wood with a six-arm structure and a decorative shaft composed of a series of original spherical and volumetric shapes. The lamp follows the typical street lamp design and was made in the 1950s or 1960s of the 20th century. It is entirely painted in a dark red or scarlet shade. The paint application has been done in a very artisanal way, aesthetically leaving visible the textures of the original wooden structure. The thin, subtle curvilinear arms support the six opal glass globe-shaped shades. The shaft of the lamp is more pronounced, formed by a sequence of alternating geometric shapes that give a very specific rhythm to the supporting arm. Also, concave and convex shapes are combined throughout the piece and at the base of the set. At the top, it features a decorative steel hook in the shape of a golden ring. This lamp is the final detail that will give light and an authentic touch to any place where you place it.
About the decapé
This technique that partially reveals the material is known as decapé, a type of decorative painting that consists of removing paint from a surface so that it looks like it has been worn away by time. To decapé a piece of furniture, part of the existing paint layer is removed with sandpaper so that the previous layer or the wood shows through. To achieve this effect specific to decapé, the previous color must be revealed in the last layer of paint applied. Therefore, to achieve the aged effect of the object, two colors are necessary: the base color and the finish color. First, a layer of plastic paint is applied to the wooden surface and allowed to dry. The next step, before applying the second layer, is a sanding (using a coarse sandpaper) of the furniture, allowing the wood color to surface in some points. After this, a second pass with a fine sandpaper is required to smooth the surface. Finally, a last layer of varnish should be applied, giving it a certain shine as well.
