Bronze Elephant Group in Art Deco style, 8 x 15 x 8 cm, weighing 625 g, made in France, dating to 1970–1980, depicting a mother elephant with her calf on a variegated marble base in excellent condition.
Description from the seller
Art Deco Bronze Elephant Group on Marble Base – after Irénée Rochard.
A highly decorative and emotionally engaging Art Deco bronze sculpture depicting a mother elephant with her calf, executed in a warm, nuanced patinated bronze and mounted on an elegant variegated marble base. A great example of 1930s French antiques.
This piece clearly reflects the influence of the French animalier tradition and is stylistically attributed “after” Irénée Rochard (1906–1984), one of the most celebrated sculptors known for his refined and naturalistic animal studies during the early 20th century.
The composition captures a tender moment of movement and protection, with the adult elephant leading while the calf follows closely — a theme that strongly resonated within French Art Deco decorative arts of the 1920s–1930s, where exotic animals symbolized both elegance and modernity.
The sculpture is mounted on a solid marble base, whose natural veining provides a refined contrast to the warm bronze tones — a hallmark of higher-quality decorative pieces from the period.
Dimensions & Weight
8 x 15 x 8 cm (h x w x d)
Weight: 625 g
Condition; In excellent vintage condition
No cracks or structural issues. Some minimal wear on the marble base.
Beautiful, untouched patina
