Description from the seller
This decorative ornament fits well with the language of late Art Nouveau, when metalworking sought to fuse organic sensuality, mythological references, and an extremely careful execution. The piece shows an elongated, stylized body that descends like a column or corbel, crowned by a bronze relief representing the muse Eurydice. The face appears idealized, with soft, symmetrical features, framed by a wavy hairstyle and a headdress that recalls the musical and vegetal forms so characteristic of the style. That combination of female figure, fluid lines, and symbolic ornamentation is one of the movement's most recognizable hallmarks.
The bronzing modeling suggests work from a specialized workshop: the volumes are softly polished, the transitions between planes are delicate, and the facial expression maintains that balance between serenity and melancholy often associated with the Eurydice myth. The surface seems to have been treated with a warm patina, typical of French pieces from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when decorative sculpture was conceived as a luxury object integrated into furniture, frames, or architectural elements.
At the back, the author's signature is visible, belonging to the French school, which reinforces the stylistic attribution. France was one of the most influential centers of Art Nouveau, especially in Paris and Nancy, where sculptors and artisans worked bronze with a refinement that combined academic tradition and ornamental modernity. The presence of the signature indicates that this is not a mass-produced element, but a piece conceived with artistic intent, probably intended for a high-end piece of furniture or a bourgeois interior of the era.
