Description from the seller

Ancient Russian icon with "Four Selected Saints" (including St. Matrona, St. Eudokia, and St. Tatiana) from the 19th century (circa 1880).

Hand-painted with egg tempera colors on a wooden panel with a chalk ground and a gold ground.

The painting is very finely and masterfully executed (see photos).

Typical method of icon production in 18th and 19th century Tsarist Russia.

To the left of the four saints is the St. Archangel Michael, to the right the guardian angel. Over the four saints floats Jesus Christ on a cloud.

This is an Old Believer icon, likely produced to commission. The painting is quite masterful and detailed (see photos).

Perfectly coordinated color contrasts and successful shading. The painting contains very authentic craquelure (see photos).

Partial restorations are present (see photos). Especially expressive and striking are the faces of the saints (see photos). The saints are inscribed. The inscriptions are clearly legible.

On the back there are cross-spacers attached. Stable and solid wooden panel. The icon is in good condition with typical age-related signs of use (see photos).

An icon for collectors and connoisseurs of the subject.

All details are clearly readable in the photos. Photos are part of the description.

Dimensions: 35 x 28.5 x 2.9 cm
