Description from the seller
Splendid double bedspread in pure damask cotton with handmade loom work (piquet) from the first half of the 1900s, entirely woven with damask embroidery and ton-sur-ton circles. The distinctive feature is the weaving technique that sets it apart from typical printed or embroidered pieces with raised work, as the designs were woven into the fabric. The effect is stunning. There are squares with a flower in the center and hieroglyphs around them.
The piquet weave is a process that creates fabrics with relief patterns, obtained through a special weave using a double weft or raised threads. The relief is produced by a two-weft weave that gives thickness and a different appearance to the fabric. This bedspread is all one continuous piece of work.
To embellish it, a straight 10 cm wide band runs along the top.
The bedspread without lace measures 226 cm in width and 213 cm in length. Add 10 cm of straight fringe.
The entire piece is crafted both in the central part and along the sides. Along the entire perimeter, there are diamonds 10 cm high.
In the center there is an oval stitch done inside that, given the white color and the weaving, is not noticeable; on one side there is also a missing 27 cm of fringe at the terminal part, and in some spots the bedspread shows signs of age and use.
The fringe can easily be replaced by purchasing a fringe trim or a straight fringe.
Carefully looking at the photos, you can see the mending and the missing fringe.
It has always been used a lot due to its beauty, with the utmost care, and shows no stains. These are details that, when laid on a bed, highlight the embroidery and the weaving. It bears the marks of time and use. The photos are more explanatory than words. It is part of my family’s dowry.
I have used it a lot precisely because of the weaving.
For shipping I use private couriers rather than the post office so it arrives faster and communication is easier.
Costs vary depending on whether it is Europe, zone 1 or 2 (e.g., United Kingdom, Switzerland, Eastern countries) or zone 3 (Norway, Malta, Cyprus), and the rest of the world.
Customs duties will be the buyer’s responsibility.
