Description from the seller
LEGO Technic 8860 – Auto-Chassis (Vintage Classic from 1980)
Bring a real piece of LEGO history home! The LEGO Technic Set 8860 “Auto-Chassis” is regarded by collectors and LEGO brick enthusiasts worldwide as one of the most significant milestones of the entire Technic line. It was the absolute flagship model of its time and remained in the LEGO catalog for about eight years due to its enormous popularity.
Since the model deliberately omits an exterior body, it offers a view of all the mechanical marvels that laid the groundwork for modern Technic supercars.
Set number: 8860, Theme: Technic (formerly also known as Expert Builder)
Year of release: 1980, Piece count: approx. 668 pieces
Model dimensions: approx. 40 cm long and 20 cm wide (impressive size for the era!)
Highlights and features:
Functional 3-speed transmission: Manually shift through three gears and watch how the engine RPM changes in relation to wheel speed.
Boxer engine / V-4 at the rear: The transparent rear engine features pistons that move up and down realistically as you drive. A fan wheel driven by a rubber band adds extra visual dynamism.
First LEGO model with a differential: Set 8860 was the very first Technic model ever to include a functional differential gear. It prevents wheel slip during cornering.
Suspension on the rear axle: Also a premiere were the shock absorbers. The rear axle is spring-loaded and illustrates the principle of a real suspension.
Adjustable sports seats: The two red bucket seats can not only slide forward and backward in steps but also tilt via a clever lever mechanism.
Precise rack-and-pinion steering: The front axle is steered accurately through the steering wheel in the cockpit.
The set was built long ago, then taken apart and carefully repackaged into bags. The original box is in very good condition for its age, with only two small tape-related damage marks on the front. The original building instructions are in good condition for its age.
It was, back then, carefully repackaged again, but no guarantee of 100% completeness can be given.
Ideal for:
- Collectors of classic vintage LEGO sets.
- Technic enthusiasts who want to experience pure, unadulterated mechanics without electronics and without hidden coverings.
- As a nostalgic gift for those who admired this set in shop windows during the 80s.
