An antique French ebony cabinet dating to the late 19th to early 20th century (approximately 1880–1920), black wood with turned front columns and a symmetrical decorative façade, 120 cm wide, 115 cm high, 36 cm deep, weighing about 70 kg, lockable, with doors featuring lattice panels and fabric, likely a phonograph or early radio cabinet, in poor condition requiring restoration.
Description from the seller
It is very likely an antique piece of furniture from the Napoléon III / Neo-Renaissance period, dating from the late 19th century – early 20th century (around 1880–1920).
The characteristic elements:
• Tapered columns at the front → typical of the Renaissance style
• Soot-blackened wood (ebonized) → very common under Napoléon III
• Carved frieze with central motif (medallion)
• Symmetrical and substantial decorative work
• Doors with latticed panels / fabric
Probable function
The doors with fabric/grilles are a strong clue:
It is very likely to be:
• a phonograph (gramophone) cabinet
or
• an old radio cabinet (early 1900s)
The fabric allowed the sound to escape while protecting the interior.
The red interior lining is also typical of this type of furniture.
Dating
• Between 1880 and 1920
• Closer to 1900–1920 if used as a phonograph/radio
To be completely restored
To be collected in Dordogne
