Description from the seller
MASTERPIECE OF CABINETMAKING: Rare Transformable “Rest” Armchair – Luigi Filippo / Late Empire Era (19th Century)
A unique piece for discerning collectors
We are proud to present an item of exceptional rarity and historical importance: a majestic mechanical transformable armchair, a genuine jewel of engineering and design from the mid-19th century. It is not a common antique seat, but a monumental piece of furniture, characterized by a massively robust and heavy structure, a sign of uncompromising build quality.
Artistic Analysis and Exclusive Details
The chair embodies the perfect transition between the severity of the Late Empire and the fluidity of the Luigi Filippo period:
• Front Feet (the highlight): A true stylistic rarity. They feature an architectural block-like structure softened by an arched shaping that recalls ancient shackles, ending in an elegant turned bulb. A detail that gives the chair unique stability and character.
• Armrests with Scrolls: Splendid and generous double scrolls in solid wood, outlined with a refined filet in light wood that creates a superb chromatic contrast with the warm, deep tone of the original wood.
• “Relax” Mechanism: A testament to vintage mechanical engineering. With a simple movement, the seat slides and the backrest tilts, transforming this regal chair into a long 1.38-meter resting chaise longue.
Condition Report
The chair remains in overall excellent condition, with the classic damask upholstery still splendid and ready for use.
Transparency note for restoration: As documented in the close-up photos, the veneer on the two rear feet has experienced some lifting (likely due to humidity in the place where it was stored in the past). We have applied protective tape to preserve the original veneer fragments. This is a very simple aesthetic restoration intervention for any restorer, which will restore absolute perfection to this antique piece.
Why make an offer?
This chair is a time-tested investment. Its combination of imperial aesthetics, functional mechanics, and precious inlays makes it an unobtainable piece on today’s market. It is the ideal complement for a prestigious library, a notary study, or a living room that needs a strong historical personality element.
Shipping information: Given the bulk and weight of the furniture, professional bespoke packaging (pallet) will be arranged to guarantee the piece’s integrity during worldwide transport.
Don’t miss the opportunity to own a piece of European cabinetmaking history!
