Tête reliquaire attributed to the Bwende from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, 39 cm high, 1 cm wide, 1 cm deep, 1 g, from a private collection, in good condition.
Description from the seller
Relief head reliquary attributed to the Bwende (DRC), a piece of striking presence. This sculpture immediately stands out for its old red polychrome treatment, its long padded neck, and the very strong expressiveness of the face: mouth open revealing teeth, pierced gaze, beard made of fibers, pierced ears, and the coiffure/summital element in plant material. The whole forms a rare and spectacular work, typical of memory and protection objects linked to ancestor worship.
The patina and surface condition are particularly telling: pigments worn with time, worn areas, accumulations and signs of use that give the piece immediate visual authenticity. The sculpture concentrates a rare emotional charge, reinforced by the frontal presentation and the verticality of the support, designed to be seen and “present” in a ritual context.
A piece highly sought after by collectors for its typology, its aesthetic impact, and the preservation of adornment elements (fibers, coiffure, polychromy). Ideal in a high-end display case or in a collection focused on Central African ritual arts.
