Description from the seller

Mask-crest Kiyunde Tabwa
Nature and culture in African art
An exceptional piece before us: an imposing African mask that was worn by a Tabwa individual (see contextual photo attached). This bulky traditional helmet in the shape of a buffalo head bears the name kiyunde. This specimen is remarkable both for its sculptural qualities and its condition. Indeed, numerous blemishes still trace the animal's face, just as cowries are present in the eyes. The polychrome patina has also been well preserved, adding an extra touch of naturalism.

Buffalo masks of this type come from eastern Shaba. We know relatively few specimens of this kind, particularly as well carved. This remarkable object of African art evokes power and strength; it was used in the 1920s on occasions of dances where the performer wore a thick garment of soft raffia.
