Description from the seller
Extraordinary and unique mahogany chest of drawers, crafted in the bourgeois style of the first quarter of the 19th century in force in Germany and Austria (1815-1848), known as Biedermeier. Elegant structure and straight lines, characterized by decorative elements of high artistic quality, such as floral marquetry. The front is divided into three sections, each with an individual key and bone escutcheons. The largest drawer, occupying the central part of the chest, presents a semicircular opening in the wood that frames and displays a rich and refined floral marquetry in noble woods, walnut and fruitwoods.
The base and plinth are lined with lemonwood, and the entire piece rests on conical legs. Absolutely exceptional for this type of chest, and indicative of its custom-made fabrication according to the needs and tastes of the original owner, we find the first interior with compartments. The openings distribute the space, and the small compartments are closed with lids, each with a bone pull (one has come loose, but is still kept inside). The entire chest is mainly made of mahogany and mahogany palm, with a rich and bright grain. An extraordinary and unique antique piece of furniture, exceptional in its design. A piece of great elegance and beauty that will bring style and sophistication to any space.
This style characterizes German and Austrian furniture from 1815 (Vienna Congress) to 1848, with the start of revolutionary movements. Its main characteristics are simplicity and functionality. As an origin, “Biedermeier” took on, for the first time in this territory, a pejorative connotation. The word comes from “Bieder,” or “simple,” and from “Meir,” one of the most common German surnames at that time, and it was the name of a “simple” character in an Eichrodt comedy. This term signified the small conservative bourgeoisie, concerned only with their own family reality. Although pejorative, the term precisely represents the new sociopolitical situation in which the bourgeoisie is compelled or resigned to abandon the aspirations of democracy and freedom. The center of life thus becomes the home, which is no longer characterized by unrestrained luxury but by comfort and practicality.
As a result, Biedermeier furniture is functional, comfortable, and easy to obtain. The style is an evolution from Empire style toward greater simplification, without ornamental and outdated elements, with lighter, linear and curved forms, and lighter colors.
