Late 19th‑century travel trunk with a bombé Saratoga lid, constructed of wood and steel with a light canvas exterior, dimensions 53 × 75 × 44 cm.
Description from the seller
Travel case of the so‑called "bumped" shape, manufactured at the end of the 19th century (circa 1885–1900) by the prestigious General Trunk Factory J.M. GEY Senior, successor of the Maison Giral founded in 1820. Located at 19, rue Esprit-des-Lois in Bordeaux, this house was renowned for its luxury luggage aimed at an international clientele traveling by ocean liner or by rail.
Characteristics and Design:
• Structure: Domed lid (known as the "Saratoga") designed to prevent other luggage from stacking on top and to protect the delicate contents.
• Materials: Clear original fabric covering, reinforced by bent wooden slats (beech or ash) and black lacquered steel hardware.
• Interior: Superb condition with its original striped blue and white paper lining capitonnage, typical of the French aesthetic of the era.
• Authenticity label: Presence of a complete and rare advertising label inside the lid, displaying the gold and silver medals won at the expositions (including the dates 1882 and 1885).
Condition:
This trunk is in remarkable condition for its age ("as is").
• The canvas shows an authentic patina that testifies to its past travels.
• The structure is sound and solid.
• The locks and fittings are original.
• The interior label is perfectly legible, which is a major asset for collectors.
