Description from the seller
Pair of Silver-Plated Candlesticks – Corinthian Column Design – Late 19th Century - Sheffield
In excellent condition – No reserve
A refined and highly decorative pair of late 19th-century silver-plated candlesticks, executed in an elegant Corinthian column form, directly inspired by classical antiquity and widely favored during the Victorian period.
The design features richly detailed capitals with acanthus leaf ornamentation, spiral-fluted shafts, and stepped square bases with beaded borders. The proportions are particularly well balanced, giving these candlesticks a strong architectural presence despite their compact yet substantial size.
The underside bears a series of stamped hallmarks, including a crowned device, typical of high-quality Sheffield silver plate production of the late 19th century. While unmarked for a specific maker, the craftsmanship, weight, and finishing clearly place these pieces among the better-quality output of established Sheffield workshops of the period.
Produced during a time when neoclassical design dominated interior decoration, these candlesticks reflect the Victorian fascination with Greco-Roman architecture, symmetry, and refined ornamentation. Today, such examples are increasingly sought-after for their decorative versatility and timeless appeal.
Condition
In excellent condition considering age.
No dents or structural damage
Crisp and well-preserved detailing
Minor age-related wear to the sconces
Bases fitted with green protective felt
A particularly solid and well-preserved pair with strong decorative presence.
Dimensions
Height: 16.5 cm
Width: 9 cm
Depth: 9 cm
Weight (combined): approx. 1.15 kg
A heavy-quality and elegant pair, combining classical design with Victorian craftsmanship. Their weight and refined detailing make them true eye-catchers—equally suitable for a classic interior or as a contrasting accent in a modern setting.
