These nuggets originate from the desert region of Tiris Zemmour in northern Mauritania, about a hundred kilometers from an area called Guelb Ndour.
The mining of gold in this country was previously reserved for a single large industrial company.
But since 2016 individual prospecting with metal detectors has been allowed.
The gold from this region is fairly pure; generally its purity is about 950 to 980 parts per thousand, which corresponds to 22.80 to 23.50 carats.
Although gold mining has become one of Mauritania's most important resources, nuggets are quite rare, as nearly all the gold is melted into bars that are then shipped to Dubai.

I photographed these nuggets in daylight as faithfully and as accurately as possible.
