Honorary Conservator of Het Zwin
Guido Burggraeve from Knokke-Heist, no less than 32 years conservator of the Het Zwin nature reserve, died in March 2014 at the age of 74.
Burggraeve was appointed as conservator in 1970. He was a passionate bird expert and also published several books about the fauna and flora of Het Zwin. But in Knokke-Heist they know him mainly for the thousands of guided tours he gave in Het Zwin. He did this not only for the 'ordinary' visitors because Queen Fabiola and Prince Philippe, Marguerite Yourcenar, even Mobutu, all enjoyed his professional explanations. "According to my colleague Rita, who has also worked there for 32 years, I would have walked my path 3,500 times," Guido Burggraeve said at the time of his farewell. "I myself have long since lost count. My finest task consisted of teaching people to approach nature."
Guido Burggraeve retained his position as conservator until his retirement in 2003. He was then succeeded by the current conservator Kris Struyf. Burggraeve was later permitted to bear the title of emeritus conservator.
André Buzin (Dinant, December 31, 1946) is a Belgian draftsman, illustrator and painter, mainly known for his realistic depictions of fauna and flora (especially birds but also of other animals, butterflies and flowers). His work has gained national and international recognition, especially in the philatelic world through his various stamp designs.
