Bel Ensemble de Curiosités: Japanese Secret Boxes and Collectible Cases (19th–20th Century)
Description of the lot:
Collection of 6 pieces of fine tabletterie comprising objects of Japanese popular art and European master boxes. This decorative ensemble attests to a high level of artisanal skill in woodwork and marquetry.
Details of the pieces:
1. 1 Japanese secret box (Himitsu-Bako): Traditional Hakone work in Yosegi-zaiku marquetry.
• It is adorned with a natural-wood marquetry landscape of Mount Fuji. Functional sliding mechanism.
2. Napoleon III jewelry box: Exterior leather (or faux leather) bound with a decoration of gilt latticework, interior originally lined with intense violet silk velvet.
3. Long box for tabletterie: Spring floral pattern in fine marquetry on light wood. Ideal for storing brushes or calligraphy items.
4. Two presentation boxes: * One long Italianate-case, interior white satin.
• One fan box or glove box, interior cherry-red felt.
5. Masterpiece miniature: Small box in precious wood with inlaid scrolling foliate motifs.
Condition:
Overall in good used condition. The secret boxes’ mechanisms have been tested and are functional. Original patina, slight signs of age that highlight the authenticity of the pieces (see photos for details of the marquetry).
