Two French Napoléon III period tea boxes dating to circa 1860–1880, in antique style, made of wood with brass and nacre accents, comprising a rosewood galbée box with geometric marquetry and a rectangular burr wood box with a nacre cartouche, both in fairly good condition with wear and some missing elements.

Lot of 2 Napoleon III tea boxes – Rosewood and veneers – 19th century
Set of two French tea caddies dating from the Napoleon III period, around 1860–1880. These cases illustrate the decorative refinement of the Second Empire through the use of precious woods, marquetry, brass, and mother-of-pearl. Tea boxes of this era were intended for storing loose tea. The internal metal linings are often missing or incomplete on this type of antique object.
1. Fluted rosewood tea box
Wood: rosewood
Decoration: geometric chevron and diamond-shaped marquetry
Shape: fluted, typical of the Napoleon III style
Ornamentation: brass beading along the rim
Lock: present, key absent
Interior: lining and internal compartments missing
Dimensions:
Length: 22.7 cm
Width: 11.8 cm
Height: 13.7 cm
Condition: very attractive exterior presentation, marquetry well preserved, even patina. Interior empty, lining and compartments previously absent
2. Rectangular tea box in burr or veneer with mother-of-pearl cartouche
Wood: burr or veneer, probably walnut or mahogany
Decoration: central cartouche adorned with mother-of-pearl, marquetry surround
Shape: rectangular
Ornamentation: brass outlining fillets
Missing: two brass fillets missing and the lock escutcheon missing (see photos)
Interior: compartmented with an old metal lining, visible wear
Dimensions:
Length: 23.3 cm
Width: 11.4 cm
Height: 10.5 cm
Condition: sound structure, decorative pattern still legible, wear and decorative gaps visible, old patina not restored.
