Description from the seller
Chinese Bronze Seal Set with Protectors of the Four Winds
This rare set of four ancient bronze seals represents the mythological guardians of the four cardinal directions (Si Shén) from Chinese cosmology.
Each seal is crowned with one of the four celestial animals that guard the cardinal directions:
East: The Azure Dragon (青龍 - Qīng Lóng) - depicted on the right, symbol of spring and wood
West: The White Tiger (白虎 - Bái Hǔ) - visible on the left, represents autumn and metal
North: The Black Tortoise with Snake (玄武 - Xuán Wǔ) - perhaps the second figure, stands for winter and water
South: The Vermilion Bird or Red Phoenix (朱雀 - Zhū Què) - the third animal, symbolizes summer and fire
Each mythological creature rests on a square bronze base with Chinese characters that probably indicate the wind direction or blessing. The seals were traditionally used for protection, blessing documents, or in feng shui practices.
The seals are in good used condition with signs of aging. (See photos)
Very finely detailed.
Carefully packed and insured shipping.
