Conway Super Flash - Custom Art Déco Edition, black bakelite medium-format box camera from the 1950s, tested and working.
Description from the seller
Conway Super Flash Custom Art Deco Edition – Medium Format Box Camera in Bakelite with Exclusive Technical Coating
Lot Description:
We are offering at auction a one-of-a-kind piece: a classic Conway Super Flash English box camera (produced post-war at the Birmingham, UK facilities), reimagined in a contemporary key through a refined artistic and functional reinterpretation.
Design concept:
The original camera fully embodies the post-war era of democratic and amateur photography, when black bakelite allowed everyone to own a photographic device. This visual design intervention pays homage to the aesthetic roots of the era by drawing on Art Deco style, which strongly influenced the architecture and industrial graphics of the time.
Integrated graphic pattern:
After careful research among several graphic solutions, a motif with geometric elements and golden/silver skyline on a black background was selected, a perfect nod to 1930s-1950s design.
Innovative technical coating:
To rise above the sobriety of the black bakelite body, a new high-brightness coating with a special finish has been applied.
Resistance and durability:
The new material is water-repellent, oleophobic, fingerprint- and wear-resistant, offering a pleasant tactile sensation.
Technical and Aesthetic Specifications:
Brand: Conway
Model: Super Flash
Origin: Made in England
Original production period: 1950s
Body: Black fused bakelite with metal and glass details
Film format: Medium Format (Rollfilm 120 / 620)
Functionality: Single-shot shutter (Instant / Time), built-in filter selector, waist-level viewfinders (vertical and horizontal) and an integrated optical element for focus adjustment (4 ft to 9 ft / 10 ft to Inf).
