Circular lightweight wooden mask decorated with geometric shapes in brown tones, dating to the mid-20th century from the Teke Bateke culture in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with perforations around the edge for attaching raffia cloth, feathers, cowries and plant fibres, measuring 32 cm high and 28 cm wide, provenance Galerie Le Bakota, Gueye & Frères, in good condition and supplied without a stand.

Description
Light wooden circular mask decorated with geometric shapes and brown colors, presumably of Teke Bateke origin (DRC formerly Zaire). Perforations around the edge serve to attach a raphia cloth, feathers, cowries, and fibers (still present). Two slits allow the wearer to see without being seen. On the back of the mask, a ridge pierced with three holes on each side to hold the mask on the head. Matte patina locally abraded.
In good condition. Signs of wear and age, abrasion.
Provenance: Galerie Le Bakota, Gueye & Frères (Dakar, Senegal)
Ethnicity: Teke Bateke (?) Country: DRC formerly Zaire
