Walker Evans — American Photographs, a true first edition hardback of 198 pages, published in 1938 by the Museum of Modern Art, New York, in English, 23 × 20 cm, in very good condition.
Description from the seller
In 1938 Walker Evans was the first photographer to have a solo exhibition at New York's Museum of Modern Art. This is a rare copy of the first edition of this iconic book, not a later reprint.
"American Photographs holds a well deserved place at the top of the pantheon, and should be studied assiduously by any photographer attempting the tricky business of compiling a coherent photobook. It is a complex, elliptical, hugely ambitious work, exemplifying all the qualities that Evans demanded from serious photography. [it] remains a great work of art, for it showed us all - including the photographer himself - just what might be accomplished by the photobook" (Parr & Badger)
Listed in:
Martin Parr and Gerry Badger : The Photobook Vol 1, pp. 114-115
Andrew Roth : The Book of 101 Books, pp. 98-99
Condition:
This is the true first edition from 1938 with a paper label on the spine (not a later reprint). Minor edgewear to bottom and top of spine. Very slight sun fading to cover. Small creases to corner of 4 pages. Interior very clean and bright, binding tight. Please examine listing photos carefully.
