Description from the seller
Armand Rassenfosse (1862-1934)
Soleil, 1897
Original lithograph on paper.
Signed in the plate lower left in the margin.
From the iconic Portfolio made for the first exhibition of posters held in 1897 in Saint Petersburg.
Dimensions:
+ Sheet size: 34 x 25.5 cm / 13.4 x 10 inches.
+ Image size: 24 x 16 cm / 9.4 x 6.3 inches.
Condition: In reasonable/good condition, with soft folds at the edges and some small spots in the margins. Paper slightly yellowed. The right margin is lightly damaged with some small tears. Two small missing parts in the lower left corner and in the upper right corner (see photos). One small crease bottom right. The image otherwise very clean with vivid colors.
The portfolio consisted of 39 lithographic plates (smaller versions) of the largest posters printed between 1890 and 1897.
Many of the images in the series are so rare that they are nowadays not available in any other format.
Like the famous series Maitre de L'Affiche, created by Cheret in Paris, the portfolio celebrated the rise of the poster in Europe at the end of the 19th century.
