With the arrival of the W108, the fins disappeared. Designer Paul Bracq (a Frenchman) opted for more flowing lines and a lowered centerline. The car was a huge success, thanks in part to its reliability.
The new S-Class was introduced in 1965, understated and classic. The main difference from its predecessor, the so-called "Heckflosse," was its appearance. The American styling cues were gone, the window area was enlarged, and the centerline was lowered. The styling of the W108 was fantastic.
The W108 featured front and rear crumple zones, a deformable steering column, safety locks and disc brakes all round.
