A vintage solid mahogany and wood chair with olive green velvet upholstery, dating to 1940–1950, France origin, featuring a shield-shaped open back, brass tacks, and jute webbing joined with traditional carpentry, slightly wobbly but structurally stable, with a small puncture in the velvet and one missing brass tack and light edge wear.
Description from the seller
This is a vintage wooden chair, likely originating from the Netherlands, Belgium, or France, and estimated to date from the 1930s to 1950s. A unique piece that reflects early-20th-century European craftsmanship, suitable for collectors, decorators, or anyone seeking a characterful vintage accent chair.
The chair features a distinctive shield- or escutcheon-shaped open backrest with a flat top rail. The design suggests possible Neoclassical or Empire Revival influence, although the style has not been conclusively attributed. The frame is made from solid mahogany or a similarly dark-stained hardwood.
The seat is upholstered in olive green velvet and finished with brass tacks around the edge. Beneath the seat, the original jute webbing is still intact, and the chair is constructed using traditional joinery methods—without any screws, relying instead on nails and wood joints. The rear legs are subtly curved, adding to the elegance of the overall form.
Condition:
- Slightly wobbly, but structurally stable and suitable for seating use
- One small puncture in the velvet upholstery (visible in photographs)
- One brass tack is missing, causing a corner of the fabric to hang slightly loose (no tears)
- Light edge wear to the wood, consistent with age
- No visible signs of restoration or modern modifications
