Half a year after the release of the Macintosh IIx, Apple introduced the Macintosh IIcx in 1989. Although it closely resembled the IIx and offered the same performance, the IIcx was quieter due to its quieter fan on a smaller power supply. The design was also made more compact by reducing the number of NuBus slots from 6 to 3. The new case, Apple's first designed to operate in either horizontal or vertical orientation, was used in its successors, the IIci and Quadra 700. The idea for vertical orientation, one of the first mini-tower cases, was suggested by Apple CEO John Sculley, who was running out of space on his desk. The model was named IIcx for 'compact' (similar to the earlier Apple IIc model in the Apple II series), with the 'x' indicating the 68030 processor. Users appreciated the Mac IIcx because its components and parts—such as RAM, NuBus slots, and power supply—could be snapped into place inside the case without the need for screws. There was a central safety screw to hold the assembly together, but it was often not reinstalled if removed. At its introduction, Jean-Louis Gassee demonstrated the IIcx's modular design by assembling one from parts in front of an audience. This design made it less expensive to build, easier to repair, and earned it high praise and a warm reception in the Mac community. This model was succeeded by the Macintosh IIci, which used the same case. The case is unofficially considered a Snow White design. It could run System 6 and System 7. The case was designed by the Apple Industrial Design Group and, although it drew upon the Snow White design language, made the Macintosh IIcx the first of the computers designed by the then-new Apple Industrial Design Group. The year 1989 marked the beginning of efforts to break ties with Frog Design.
