Le Grand Héritage, a 1992 first edition published by Musée Dapper, concerns African art, with 303 pages and dimensions 33 by 24 by 3.5 cm, in French.
Description from the seller
From wood sculpture, stone or cast metal, masks, drums, decorative painting on the walls of houses made of sun-dried mud, but also watercolors and oil or gouache paintings: African art is all of that at once, high symbols of a cultural wealth whose importance is hard to measure; hence, the title of Christiane Falgayrettes-Leveau’s book seems particularly fitting. More than helping us to grasp this primitive art, the director of the Dapper Museum invites us to a journey of a thousand discoveries, as surprising as each other. Living in a strictly magical era, man would have developed primitive art to charm his mythical ancestor or to exert influence on the world of surrounding spirits, faithful to the African belief, according to which life and all that exists in the universe come from the mysterious and elusive work of a supreme being. The quality of this work, of course, rests on the author's authority on her subject, but also on the value of the carefully gathered iconography. --Pierre Guillaume
