【Product details】
This elegant wooden tokkuri (sake flask) from the late Edo period is adorned with a refined nashiji finish, creating a shimmering pear-skin effect across its entire surface. Scattered throughout the exterior are finely executed maki-e depictions of the Maru ni Kikyo (Ringed Bellflower) family crest, adding a distinguished touch. The interior is coated in rich vermilion lacquer, a striking contrast to the subdued gold tones of the exterior.
The kikyo (bellflower) has long been cherished in Japan as a symbol of sincerity, elegance, and enduring strength. It is particularly associated with the legendary samurai Akechi Mitsuhide, for whom the Maru ni Kikyo crest became an iconic emblem. This connection imbues the flask with historical depth, linking it to Japan’s feudal past and the legacy of the warrior class.
Maki-e is a traditional Japanese decorative technique in which gold or silver powder is sprinkled onto wet lacquer to create intricate designs. Nashiji employs a similar method, using gold or silver flecks to achieve a pear-skin-like texture, offering a unique shimmer and depth to the surface.
Showing signs of age-related wear, including small lacquer chips around the spout and lid edges. The accompanying silk pouch has some tears. Please refer to the photographs for details on its condition.
