They are called Benin bronzes, the portraits and objects executed in brass related to the former Kingdom of Benin, which in 1897 was destroyed by the English after the confiscation of the royal treasures. These brass objects, but also objects of ivory, were sold to museums and private individuals to compensate for expedition costs. The objects attracted much attention due to the refinement with which the 'bronzes' were crafted. Where there is demand, there is supply. To this day, new brass objects in both modern and traditional styles are offered in Nigeria. The depiction is not traditional, and the object is very likely made around the time of purchase.
