Smoking on airplanes was once an innocuous activity. After World War II, a large majority of airlines allowed smoking on flights. Cigarettes were commonly handed out to coach class passengers. Some airlines even advertised free cigars as an offering for first-class passengers. While smoking wasn't necessarily encouraged on flights, little to no efforts were made to separate smokers from non-smokers.
Ashtrays were seen as forms of advertisement by most airlines. Because of this, they universally featured some logo, name, or other design that an individual could recognize, making identification easy.

Frequently, the most challenging part of identifying an airline’s ashtray is discerning when it was manufactured. One method of identification is the logo. Logos change over the years. By identifying the timeframe during which a company used a specific logo, a collector can reliably set a firm range of dates.

Vintage ashtrays were manufactured in various materials, including pewter, glass, milk glass, metal, or plastic. Correctly identifying some materials takes experience but is not impossible for amateurs.

While not often used on planes, some of the most valuable pieces in this memorabilia category are model plane ashtrays. While the dimensions of these pieces make them unwieldy in a passenger seat, they were the pinnacle of ashtray advertising. The quality models attached to the ashtrays were artistic recreations of actual planes used by the airline. This detail is a significant driver for their price tags. These pieces are often rare but tend to appreciate in value provided they are kept in good condition.
