Description from the seller
Villeroy & Boch, Mettlach
Art Nouveau punch tureen without lid, model 2974, production years 1905 to 1909
6 shotels: 1.5 x 14.5 • 2962
5 cups: 5 x 10 x 8 • 2962
Set of six tea cups with matching saucers by Villeroy & Boch, made in Mettlach around 1900-1910. The set is executed in Jugendstil style and seamlessly matches the previously described tea set from the same line in terms of decor and design.
The cups have a slightly conical shape with a gracefully curved handle. The decoration consists of a stylized band with floral motifs in relief, arranged in a repeating pattern around the upper edge of each cup. Below this band, vertical stripes in cobalt blue and mustard yellow run downward, aligning with the rhythm of the hexagonal dishes.
The tiles are hexagonal in shape, with broad surfaces in mustard yellow interrupted by narrow, vertical cobalt blue lines. The color combination of cream-white, cobalt blue, and mustard yellow creates a harmonious whole with distinct graphic accents.
The design and decoration are typical of the Jugendstil period, with influences from the Wiener Secession and the German reform style. This set combines functionality with artistic quality and is a fine example of Villeroy & Boch's aesthetic ambitions at the beginning of the twentieth century.
Underside marked with model number 2962.
Metlach brand VB
Legal company V.S. Patent of
Made in Germany
Condition: Normal signs of wear due to use. Has cracks in the bottom (see photos).
This does not detract from the decorative value of the terrine.
Literature: Walt Vogdes, The Essential Mettlach Marks
Note: Model 2974 belongs to the austere, graphic Art Nouveau style that Villeroy & Boch developed around 1900 as a modern alternative to their richly embossed decoration. The symmetrical lancet shapes and the two-tone palette illustrate the factory's innovative spirit, while the grape cluster motifs allude to its use as a punch tureen. A characteristic example of Mettlach stoneware from the heyday of Art Nouveau.
