AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Insula instar Navis, cum Templo Aesculapy etc: Rome. (1704)

Rare engraving of the Isola Tiberina (Latin: Insula Tiberina), in the middle of Rome, showing the Tiber Island in its height, when it was modelled, using Travertine slabs, to resemble a Roman galley. The obelisk represents the mast.

After fall of the Roman Empire, most of the travertine cladding had been removed for reuse in Medieval and Rennaissance monuments and churches around the City.

Engraving published by P. Mortier in Amsterdam in 1704, after the 17th century engraving by J. Blaeu.

Excellent condition.
