Description from the seller
Greece. Athens. 1 Drachma. 1971. Constantine II (1964–1973).
- Value: 1 Drachma
Year: 1971
Reign: Constantine II (1964–1973)
- Inscriptions: Obverse: CONSTANTINE KING OF THE GREEKS · 1971. Reverse: KINGDOM OF GREECE · 21 APRIL 1967 · 1 Drachma
Grade: AU 58 (NGC)
Coin issued under the monarchy of King Constantine II, featuring his portrait on the obverse with the Greek inscription 'King of the Hellenes' and the minting date, 1971. The reverse commemorates the military coup of April 21, 1967, displaying the regime's symbol: a phoenix rising from flames with a soldier armed in the center, accompanied by the inscription with the date of the coup. This coin is a politically charged piece and highly representative of the Greek military dictatorship period (1967–1974). Although minted in 1971, it reflects the regime's propaganda and marks the imminent end of the monarchy in Greece. Its design and historical context make it relevant for both political collectors and numismatists.
