Bronze Viking era two-faced enamelled cross pendant, 37 x 25 mm, weight 5.15 g, origin Northern Europe, dating to the 9th–11th centuries, acquired in 2004 in Madrid from a private collection.
Description from the seller
Medieval-era Viking pendant with two enamelled faces in yellow.
A bronze cross with an integral suspension loop and expanded circular terminals. Each cavity embedded in the terminal arms and center of the front side displays original yellow enamel decorations; the five circular areas represent the five wounds Christ suffered during the crucifixion.
This style is often known as a 'Viking cross' because they are frequently found at ancient Viking village sites due to the gradual conversion of indigenous peoples to Christianity. The bronze surfaces have developed a beautiful green patina.
Very rare type (not number 153 from W. Kail's medieval crosses catalog).
Condition: original and enameled. Usable. Review the photos to form your own impression.
