Roman solid silver zoomorphic brooch / fibula. The finely crafted silver fibula is depicting a dynamic hunting scene with a hound chasing a rabbit or hare. The animals are modelled in openwork relief, with incised detailing suggesting fur and musculature. The rabbit crouches low as the hound stretches forward in pursuit. The reverse retains traces of the catchplate; the pin is now missing.
Brooches of this type were popular in the Roman provinces, celebrating themes of agility, hunting, and nature.
Size: ± 30,2 x 15,5 mm
Very good and solid condition. Complete with hinge and catchplate, pin is no longer present. Signs of wear consistent with age and use.
Certificate of Authenticity: available upon request (pdf-format).
This type of brooch, produced with Roman metalworking techniques, reflects influences from the Germanic frontier regions where the axe was a powerful symbol of strength and warfare. Such pieces were likely worn by individuals living along the borders of the Empire, blending Roman craftsmanship with Germanic martial imagery.
