Description from the seller

From an etymological point of view, pyrite gets its name from the Greek 'pyr,' meaning 'fire,' or 'fire stone.' It was in 1845 that the Austrian mineralogist Wilhelm Karl Ritter von Haidinger officially named it 'pyrite.' This stone is first mentioned in the year 50 by the Greek doctor and botanist Dioscorides. He named it thus because of its ability to produce sparks when rubbed against metal or another rock. It seems that even during prehistory, pyrite was used to start fires through the same shock method of striking the stone.

Throughout history, pyrite has been used for various purposes, making it a stone with many facets. Indeed, in ancient Greece and Rome, it was used for making ornaments and jewelry, while Native Americans used it as a mirror due to its reflective appearance.

In the 19th century, during the Gold Rush, pyrite was nicknamed 'Fool's Gold' due to its resemblance to the precious yellow metal. Indeed, many gold prospectors and miners were misled into thinking they had found nuggets, only to realize it was ultimately pyrite. Later, in the 20th century, it was used in various industries, notably for the production of sulfur and sulfuric acid, to make gunpowder, as a flint stone, or in the field of radio reception with the famous 'pyrite crystal detector' or 'crystal receiver.'

Today, pyrite is a stone with strong symbolism as it serves as protection against negative energies and as a good luck charm for those who wear it.
