Film lobby cards are a uniquely American creation. They are a hybrid of movie posters and, usually, pictures of movie stars. In the early 1910s, the small nickelodeons, where movies were first shown, began to transform into larger, more permanent, and more elegant venues. As a result of this growth, more advertising was needed to promote the films that these new movie palaces offered. So in addition to the beautiful, colorful lithographic film posters, there was a need for photographic images.
Sometime around 1913, lobby card sets were produced, and they were basically photographs printed on a heavy paper that looked like cardboard. For several years, lobby sets were made in both an 11" x 14" (about 28 x 36 cm.) size and a smaller 8" x 10" version (about 20 x 26 cm.). Eventually, the larger 11" x 14" size became the standard size for U.S. lobby cards. Sets usually contain 8 cards, but only four and as many as 15 were made.
