Description from the seller
The icon you show depicts the Ascension of the Prophet Elijah (Elijah taken up to heaven in a chariot of fire), a very important scene in the Orthodox Christian tradition.
Description and meaning
In the upper right corner, the prophet Elijah (Илия / Илья) is seen ascending to heaven in a chariot of fire drawn by winged horses. This is the moment described in the Second Book of Kings (2 Kings 2:11), when Elijah is taken to heaven without dying, in a whirlwind of fire.
On the left, among the clouds, God or Christ appears, receiving the prophet.
In the center, below, is Elisha (Елисей), Elijah's disciple, who witnesses the miracle and receives the prophet's cloak, a symbol of the transmission of his spiritual power.
Around, there are other prophets or disciples who are witnesses to the event.
In the lower left corner, a reclining figure — often a prophet or an angel — is depicted, symbolizing sleeping humanity or the earth as a witness to the event.
Please provide the text you want translated.
In old ecclesiastical Russian, it says something similar to:
Image of the Fiery Ascent of the Prophet Ilii
What does it mean: 'The vision of the ascent in fire of the prophet Elijah'.
Style:
It is a Russian Orthodox icon, probably from the 18th–19th centuries, painted with tempera on panel and framed with a traditional dark border.
