Ancient Greek arrowhead with three fins, dating to the 8th–4th century BC, 4.2 cm long and 0.7 cm wide, provenance Germany and acquired in 2025 from Galerie/Antiquaire.
Description from the seller
Arrow tips with three fins and an improved aerodynamic structure.
The oldest type of socketed arrowhead with three fins (called Scytho-Iranian) appeared in the Assyrian armies about 2,700 years ago. According to researchers, they were probably introduced by mercenaries serving the Assyrian army or exiles transported to the empire's northern division. This type of arrowhead disappeared from the Levant after the Assyrian empire's retreat.
Most of the pointed weapons found date from the Persian and Hellenistic periods. Similar weapons have also been found in the capitals of important Persian provinces and at major sites of the Persian and Greek wars.
The use of these types of arrows continued during the Hellenistic period, and some of them were even used at the beginning of the Roman period, with Eastern archers being known as the best even among the ranks of the Roman army.
Dimensions: length 4.2 cm - width 0.7 cm
Period: 8th century BC / 4th century BC.
Provenance: Germany, Galerie M.T.Z
Previously: former collection of Professor Dr. Erik Jayme.
