Description from the seller
This impressive vase in natural malachite is a tribute to the highest Russian lapidary tradition, one that over the centuries has adorned the interiors of the Hermitage, the Romanov palaces, and the imperial reception halls. The piece is born from the union of hundreds of malachite sections extracted from the Democratic Republic of Congo, chosen for their intense color and regular patterns. Each segment was manually shaped and assembled into a perfect mosaic – the renowned technique of the 'Russian Mosaic,' a symbol of the great Petrograd masters of the nineteenth century. The vase features a slender body, developed in an octagonal shape, which enhances the optical effect of the circular bands, concentric eyes, and sinuous veins characteristic of high-quality malachite. The surface, fully polished to a mirror finish, reveals a richness of natural patterns reminiscent of the decorative panels of the Hermitage's green rooms. The shades range from the lighter jade green to the deep greens of classic malachite, intertwining compact botroidal structures with lighter fibrous areas. The stepped base, also crafted in a continuous mosaic, provides stability to the form and echoes the architectural design of imperial pedestals.
