These pieces are carved from golden obsidian, an exceptional variety that displays beautiful golden metallic reflections due to inclusions of magnetite or hematite. This stone is much rarer than standard black obsidian and is particularly sought after for high-quality craftsmanship.
The engraved geometric motifs (triangles, lines, diamond patterns) are typical of pre-Columbian art. The fan-shaped headdresses at the top directly evoke the feathers of Aztec and Maya ceremonial adornments, symbols of power and divinity.
Obsidian was sacred to the pre-Columbian civilizations of Mexico — the Aztecs called it 'itztli' and used it to make weapons, tools, divinatory mirrors, and ritual sculptures. Gold obsidian, even rarer, was reserved for prestigious objects.
The polishing work is remarkable, giving the stone a deep luster and the characteristic shimmering reflections. The details of the stylized faces and geometric patterns demonstrate significant artisanal craftsmanship.
