Description from the seller
Josef Sudek
Selection of photographs from a lifelong work
Czech photographer Josef Sudek (1896-1976) is best known for his images of Prague. Having initially worked as a bookbinder, he dedicated himself to photography after gaining experience in this field during World War I, from which he returned with a broken arm.
Fascinated by light and its absence, Joseph Sudek created images of landscapes, monuments, streets, and objects, transformed by an intimate understanding of light's ability to reveal and darkness's capacity to render things impenetrable, which are among the most captivating of the 20th century. Fully aware of the role that print quality plays in the expressive potential of an image, he skillfully explored the evocative power of the carbon process or the more reflective and descriptive gelatin process with silver salts.
The photographer's unlimited creativity was nourished by deep friendships with an intimate circle of artists, particularly poets, painters, sculptors, decorators, writers, and musicians who, together, contributed to the vibrant artistic environment of Prague in the first half of the twentieth century.
