Description from the seller

Impressive and rare fossil slab featuring numerous belemnites (Belemnitida), the extinct ancestors of modern squids. The fossils are excellently preserved in three dimensions within their natural calcite shell matrix and display a rich variety of sizes and shapes. The rostra (the internal skeletal parts of the animals) exhibit a deep, glossy black-brown color and are scattered within the original sediment structure.

The piece is entirely natural, with no restoration or cleaning — an authentic example of a so-called belemnite battlefield plate. The matrix is stable, with natural fracture lines typical of this type of rock.

Belemnite plates of this size, density, and quality are increasingly rare. This specimen is a classic and collectible piece from the famous Holzmaden layers, highly sought after by collectors and museums.

Identifiable fossils
Belemnitida (dozens of complete rostra, various sizes)
Sporadic fragments of ammonites and shells (bivalves).
Other microfossils in the background matrix.

Origin
Holzmaden region, Baden-Württemberg, Germany
- Formation: Posidonienschiefer
- Age: Toarcian (Early Jurassic, ~180 million years)

Dimensions: 25.5 × 23 × 3.6 cm
Weight: 3.6 kg

State: Naturally, unrestored.
