Dubonnet is a brand of flavored vermouth primarily made with quinquina, available in red and white varieties. It was created by the French chemist Joseph Dubonnet. In Paris, near the future location of the Opéra Garnier, Joseph Dubonnet developed his quinquina wine in 1846. To combat malaria, he devised this bitter-tasting medicine, which he masked with a decoction of herbs and spices with a strong flavor. Initially, the soldiers of the Foreign Legion used it in mosquito-infested marshes in North Africa.
